Diagnostics of Gas Turbine Engines and Gas Turbines

Aviadvigatel OJSC does much to assure high reliability of gas turbine engines for aviation and industrial application and their safe operation, develops engine technical condition inspection and diagnostics methods, requirements to ground-based and onboard monitoring and diagnostic systems, provides consulting services with respect to diagnostics-related support of its engines.

Parametric Diagnostics of Aero Engines

Among other things, high performance of the PS-90A aircraft engine is achieved through using various automated diagnostic systems which are based on flight data processing algorithms developed by Aviadvigatel OJSC specialists in cooperation with operators and implemented in Diagnosis-90 and SDD-96 automated diagnostic systems.

Algorithms of on-ground processing of flight data ensure:

  • check of flight data adequacy
  • check of adequacy of engine and engine systems faults and failures messages recorded by the airborne recording system
  • determination of engine operating time
  • check of engine parameters during start-up
  • check of flow path parameters
  • check of oil system parameters
  • automated mechanisms operation check
  • thrust reverser operation check
  • engine vibration monitoring

The automated systems that are built based on these algorithms ensure continuous monitoring of the airline engine fleet technical condition that allows significant saving of engine operation and maintenance costs and improving flight safety. 

Aviadvigatel OJSC specialists developed the software allowing fast and qualitative verifying, optimizing and improving the already existing algorithms and significantly simplifying development of new engine technical condition monitoring and diagnostics algorithms taking into account the previously acquired information stored in data bases. 


Parametric Diagnostic of IGTs

Traditionally Aviadvigatel OJSC pays a great attention to reliability, safety and high efficiency of its gas turbines. Besides thorough design study it is achieved through using protection systems, on-line monitoring systems and automated systems of gas turbines diagnostics.

Sufficient instrumentation and use of digital gas turbine, gas compressor package and genset control systems allows using parametric information for efficient diagnostics of gas turbine technical condition in the process of operation. 

Vast experience in developing the means of aero engine parametric diagnostics is used to develop methods and algorithms of IGT technical condition monitoring and in the process of monitoring and diagnostics system putting into service and their operational development.

Tribology-based Diagnostics of Aero Engines and IGTs

Aviadvigatel OJSC has experience in development of the methods of gas turbine engine technical condition diagnostics by oil-wetted parts wear particles, and the methods of fault search and elimination at increased content of wear particles in oil. 

The key instruments of tribology-based diagnostics are spectral and ferrography analyses.

Spectral analysis of oil samples allows determining the concentration of wear debris in an oil system, which varies depending on wearing rate. There are special programs that make it possible to determine the grade of debris material using the same equipment thus significantly improving the accuracy of defect source determination.

Ferromagnetographic analysis of oil samples allows determining the size of wear debris and wear nature. For oil samples analysis, wear debris type books were compiled and engine components failure identification methods were developed. Atlases of wear particles are made and engine component fault detection methods are developed to perform oil samples analysis.
