THE CONFERENCE ON GAS TURBINES APPLICATION IN INDUSTRY HELD IN PERM
OLGA OSIPOVA
On September 7 - 10, 2009 in Perm the 56th session of Gas Turbines Commission of Russian Academy of Sciences was held on Aviadvigatel`s basis. The subject of the Research and Practice Conference was «Gas turbines application in power generation and industry (projects, operation, maintenance, contribution to science)». The conference was dated for the 60th anniversary of Gas Turbines Commission of Russian Academy of Sciences and for the 75th anniversary of Perm Motors.
More than 100 leading scientists and specialists of gas turbine engine building took part in the conference. The organizers of the Session were: Russian Academy of Sciences, Division of Power Generation, Machine Building, Mechanics and Control, Gas Turbines Commission of Russian Academy of Sciences, All-Russian Heat Engineering Institute OJSC and Aviadvigatel OJSC.
Gas turbine engine building has great outlooks. In spite of development of nuclear power industry, renewable sources and hydraulic power generation, the use of fossil fuel energy is the predominant in the nearest 50-70 years. The specialists from Moscow, St.Petersburg, Ufa, Rybinsk, Sumy, Nikolaev, Ekaterinburg and Perm taken part in the research and practice forum were confronted by a complicated task not only to share the achieved results but to determine the main trends of the sector future development.
Alexander Inozemtsev, General Designer of Aviadvigatel OJSC, opened the conference and pointed out in his report that «today progress in power generation largely depends on gas turbines development». Both generating companies and oil-and-gas production enterprises demand from engine builders new and more powerful machines, which can replace the existing steam power generating modules. Now Perm engine builders provide power generating companies with gas turbines rated at 2.5...25 MW. Our Design Bureau has developed a reserve which let us work at creation of gas turbines with higher power equal to even 180 MW.
Three days of conference were very busy: plenary meeting, more than 40 reports and their discussions, round table on the questions of domestic powerful gas turbine, a visit to the Perm engine building complex. Session participants could visit Perm gas turbines assembly shop and Aviadvigatel`s design departments which develop turbines, compressors, combustors. The most acute and vital questions of development, operation and service of gas turbines and generating sets were risen here at the heart of domestic engine building.

The most acute problem of Russian society - the intergenerational continuity - is of special interest for gas turbine engine builders. That is why the second day of the conference was fully dedicated to the reports of competitors on the best science or design effort among young professionals. The conferees pointed out with satisfaction that despite numerous problems in the sector there is a worthy generation of young scientists and designers, who can dialogue with venerable scientists and highly experienced experts about vital problems in gas turbine engine engineering.
The first prize of the competition was awarded to the research of Vakhtang Tsatiashvilli, Design Engineer of Aviadvigatel OJSC, «Prediction of emission characteristics in reactor model of ideal high-grade-lean combustor on design phase».
The second prize was awarded to Alexander Pavlov, Design Engineer of «Power machines - Leningrad metal plant» OJSC, who presented design study and comparison of configurations of power gas turbine dummy chamber of medium power class. In addition to diplomas and valuable presents the winners were awarded by money reward.
Gurgen Olkhovsky, the chairman of gas turbines Commission of Russian Academy of Sciences and Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, has pointed out that carrying out of the 56th Session on Aviadvigatel basis is a correct decision, based not so much on the anniversary of perm engine building enterprise as on experience of perm specialists in gas turbine engines development and on modern condition of Design Bureau. Aviadvigatel Design Bureau has not only maintained intellectual potential of its staff in the terms of non-stable economy, but has developed it - underlined Gurgen Olkhovsky. - Aviadvigatel today means modern design process, decent material and technical base multiplied by traditions of perm design-engineering school. All these factors afforded Aviadvigatel OJSC to take advanced positions in gas turbine equipment development. Specialists of the Design Bureau have gained wide experience in development of gas turbine engines for civil aviation. Today they are working at a breakthrough project - new generation aviation and industrial engines family. Perm specialists have a lot to share.
