Series of publications “Gas turbine engines”

Five-volume textbook "Principles of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines Designing", "Gas Turbine Engines" Publication Series, A.A. Inozemtsev, M.A. Nikhamkin, V.L. Sandratsky. Moscow, "Mashinostroenie" Publishing House, 2008

The textbooks cover the general issues and principles of gas turbine engines, modules and major components design.

Materials are stated in the following sequence:

  • Aero-engine and gas turbine modules requirements.
  • Problems that have to be solved when selecting a design solution.
  • Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the basic methods of these problems resolving based on the examples of well-known designs.

In their work the authors widely employed the rich practice of one of the leading world aero-engine building school of Perm Aviadvigatel OJSC.

Many of the examined real-life designs are the components of the engines developed by the Company.

The textbooks are intended for both studying related disciplines and using data provided in the textbooks for designing in the process of writing term projects and qualifying papers.

Volume I "Principles of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines Designing. General Information. Basic Parameters and Requirements. Configurations and Structural Designs",
208 pages.

It consists of 4 Chapters, which cover the general information on gas turbine engines. Such points as one of the preferable classifications, main types of gas turbine aero-engines, engines applications, engines development history and engines "arrangement" by generations are considered.

The conceptual approaches showing how to guarantee gas turbine engines durability, reliability, manufacturability and to meet economic and environmental requirements, as well as gas turbine engines design concept in whole and gas turbine engine certification procedures are described in detail therein.

Volume II "Principles of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines Designing. General Information. Compressors. Combustion Chambers. Afterburners. Turbines. Exhaust Units",
366 pages.

It includes Chapters 5 - 9 and is devoted to major gas turbine engine modules design.

Volume III "Principles of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines Designing. Gearings and Couplings. Starting Arrangements. Pipings and Electrical Wiring. Seals. Power Drive. Noise. Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Processes of Life Cycle Support", 228 pages.

It contains Chapters 10 - 16 devoted to:

  • gear systems and couplings in gas turbine engines;
  • starting systems;
  • pipelines and electrical wiring;
  • sealing systems;
  • industrial gas turbine engines;
  • how to achieve the standard noise level, which is considered to be one of gas turbine engines environment requirements that is to be guaranteed;
  • computer-aided design and computer-aided processes of life cycle support.

Volume IV "Dynamics and Durability of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines",
204 pages.

Classical ideas about the structural strength, durability and vibrations of typical gas turbine engine components and the principles of up-to-date methods of structural analysis are stated therein. The preference is given to the information, which helps a reader to get to the heart of the phenomena that define engine reliability, to simple analytical models and methods.

Volume V "Automatics and Control of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines",
200 pages.

It covers a part of "Automatics and Control of Aero-Engines and Power Generation Gas Turbines" discipline stipulated by the state educational standard. Gas turbine engines automatics and control issues are considered in the context of the description of the systems connected with them. The statement goes from the point of view of an engine designer, without "looking" inside components and units, but presenting them as "blackboxes".
