PS-90A turbofan

The PS-90A turbofan engine (PS - Pavel Soloviev) is one of the important achievements in the Russian aviation industry of the 90-s. This aircraft engine allowed almost doubling the efficiency of new generation airplanes, and, simultaneously, ensuring their conformity to world regulations on ecology.

The PS-90A is a two-shaft bypass turbofan with fan and core airflows mixing and high level of commonality. The aero engine is equipped with a thrust reverser in a fan duct and noise suppression system.

The PS-90A turbofan was certified in 1992.

In 1997 the Supplement to the engine Type Certificate was received to approve the aircraft engine field operation based on technical condition without fixed mean time between overhauls (MTBO) rates.

It is the sole powerplant for:

  • IL-96-300PU airplane of the President of the Russian Federation
  • Long-range passenger airliner IL-96-300
  • Mid-range passenger and cargo airplanes TU-204, TU-214 and their modifications

As of the beginning of the year 2010, two hundred PS-90A engines and its modifications were operated by 24 airlines including Cubana de Aviacion S. A., Silk Way Airlines, Air Koryo.

As of August 1, 2010 the total operating time of all engines operated at passenger and cargo services since its serial operation, reached 2,430,809 hours.
High time engine accumulated 34,013 hours.

The PS-90A became the first Russian aircraft engine that accumulated over 9,000 hours without any removal - the engine installed on Aeroflot's Il-96-300 accumulated 9,936 hours.

The efforts aimed to improve the engine reliability and trouble-free operation, which have already had noticeable effects, are in progress as planned.

The integration of the second-generation sound attenuation structures into the production
PS-90A engines was completed thus making Tu-204, Tu-214 and Il-96-300 aircraft compliant with ICAO Stage 4 noise requirements.

Late in 2006 Il-96-300 aircraft with the PS-90A aero engine got the Certificate No. SSH167-Il-96-300-04 of 27.12.2006 that confirms the aircraft compliance with ICAO Stage 4 noise requirements.

In 2008, Tu-204 aircraft equipped with the PS-90A got the Flyover Noise Type Certificate No. SSH170-Tu-207/D01 of 18.07.2008, which confirms the aircraft compliance with ICAO Stage 4 noise requirements.

The Supplement to Type Certificate No. 16-D/D25 that confirms the PS-90A aero-engine compliance with 2008 ICAO emission requirements was obtained in 2007.

High reliability and life of the engine are provided by:

  • Application of new design techniques for assigned life parts and components;
  • Comprehensive upgrading of the basic parts on special benches to get target life;
  • Efficient monitoring of the engine condition in field operation.

The PS-90A turbofan engine has a modular design. Number of modules - 11. Some modules are replaceable during field operation.

This aero-engine is equipped with a two-channel electronic control and monitoring system ensuring duly troubleshooting and on-condition operation.
